Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “I’m in Your Church at Night” by Active Child from their 2010 Curtis Lane EP on Filter US.

Active Child – I’m in Your Church at Night (MP3)

Active Child might not be a misnomer for Pat Grossi’s outfit. As a child, Grossi performed with Philadelphia Boys Choir, tweaking his voice, since then, to perfection. His mysterious, downright angelic vibrato parallels Antony Hegarty or Justin Vernon laid over a creative soundscape of harps, synth, and ambience. It’s no wonder NME included him in their year-end, best of ’10 list. Did I mention we were lucky enough to host Mr. Grossi just a few months ago for a chilling in-studio performance?

Active Child’s music is both heavenly alluring and hellishly dark, a bold contrast of good and evil, hot and cold, black and white. Grossi leaves you comforted, yet insecure, as his cherubic vocals and bright harp twinklings flutter to keep you from slipping into the synthesized darkness that surrounds it, like a gothic worship of our heavenly beginnings. Think Joy Division backing Joanna Newsom.
