Mothers are fond of saying, and not always with a tinge of sarcasm, that every day is mother’s day. But not every day does mom get a Hallmark card — or better yet, breakfast in bed. T checked in with some of our favorite moms – including Liya Kebede, Carol Ross Joynt, Alanis Morissette, Amanda Brooks and Charlotte Dellal – to find out what they are giving to their moms and hope to get from their offspring.
Natural beauty aside, the supermodel-turned-role model Liya Kebede inherited the impulse to help others from her mother. “The world needs our mothers,” says Kebede, whose eponymous foundation provides health care for young children and their mothers authentic soccer jerseys, adding that she sees Mother’s Day as an opportunity to raise awareness about maternal mortality. “I am always touched when friends make contributions to my foundation on my behalf.” Not that she automatically puts giving over receiving. “I always love the homemade gifts,” she says. “They never get old for me.” That said, there’s always room to indulge — Beatrice Grey jewelry, Proenza Schouler lace-up booties and a Lemlem gauze dress are at the top of Kebede’s wish list. “What I love most about Mother’s Day is that I am acknowledged and honored for being a mother,” she says. Her most memorable Mother’s Day? “When the kids made delicious muffins and brought me breakfast in bed.”
